About me
Zoë is a masters student at the University of Toronto. Her eagerness to learn more about the harmful materials in our environment started with an internship with Ocean Uprise by Parley for the Oceans and a position as a field researcher with the U of T Trash Team’s Fighting Floatables Project using seabins and other trash traps to divert plastic waste away from Lake Ontario. Previously, her undergraduate thesis in the Rochman lab looked at microplastics in landfill leachate. Continued interest in this field has transitioned to a master’s project that focuses on the automation of microplastics analysis using Raman spectroscopy. She has utilized two Ocean Wise grants to carry out community action projects for youth in Toronto. The first was a pellet percussion workshop for school-aged children to make shaker instruments using pre-production plastic pellets. The second grant was applied towards bringing the story of these pre-production plastic pellets to life by making a short-film title
