About me
He is 'Ha7li' of the 'Bear Clan' from Skookumchuck, part of 'St'at'icmulh Nation, sometimes called Interior Salish. His given English name is Carl H Sam, and his ancestral name 'Ha7li'. He was born in Mission BC and went to residential school there, furthering his artistic studies at Langara College, Emily Carr College of Art, studying all mediums and majoring in stone carving. He finds inspiration walking along a creek and spotting a stone that immediately formulates in his mind as to what it is. Imagining what it is makes it easier carving it out. For Expo '86 he joined a friend, carving at Coquitlam Stone Sculpture Symposium where he created 'The Thinkgress' on permanent display at Blue Mountain Park. Each is a unique sculpture as visioned between the rock and himself to pleasure the beholder. The greatest euphoria he feels is when someone admires a new creation. Besides stone, he also takes to wood carving, painting, drawing, cake decorating, printing, drum making and singing.
