Welcome to the 2025 Outdoor Learning Conference
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT
All aspects of sustainability rely on students' ability to critically read, write, and express ideas. Yet, instruction on climate change and sustainability is often fact-heavy and science-focused. Learn how to move students beyond “the facts” by teaching them to critically analyze and question texts including the environment, consider diverse perspectives, and identify issues of power and justice grounded in students’ local place. As students engage with sustainability topics in their communities, they become eager researchers, motivated to use writing and other modes of communication as powerful tools for action.
We will engage in a few activities, explore example lessons/unit, and review a framework to guide your unit/lesson planning. Leave with practical strategies and fresh inspiration to integrate local climate and sustainability issues into language arts or any subject! This session is based on my doctoral research in elementary schools in Canada.
