Engaging with the Land Through Birds and Technology LIMITED
Thursday May 8, 2025 9:00am - 11:30am MDT
Get to know your local birds using the magic of Merlin! Prior to the workshop, please download the Merlin app and then install the Canada West and your local bird packs so you’re ready to explore your local birds and the birds of Banff. Bring your binoculars too, if you have them.

The Merlin Bird ID app lets you discover which birds are sharing the land with you from season to season, by sight or sound. This app uses billions of eBird observations shared by participatory scientists from around the world to generate a list of potential birds based on your location and date. Its technology allows users to identify birds by sight, sound, or using a photo. We will explore the four clues to bird ID, research your local birds using the app, draw a focus bird, and then take a bird walk to gain real-life practice using these tools.

Listen to the Land: Sacred Buffalo Guardian Hike FULL
Thursday May 8, 2025 9:00am - 11:30am MDT
"Start your learning journey in Banff with an interactive hike beginning from the Banff Centre. This awe inspiring location is nestled on the slopes of Eyarhey Tatanga Woweyahgey Wakân in the Nakoda language or Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain.

Your guides — Îyârhe Nakoda Knowledge Holder Travis Rider and ACMG hiking guide Adam Mertens — will share stories and perspectives on the complex cultural and natural history of the Bow Valley, using a two-eyed seeing lens. They will invite you to reflect on your own teaching practice and the ways educators can approach the land as a teacher to explore complex topics including Truth and Reconciliation, Climate Action, Community Building and Personal Resilience.

This intentional approach to land acknowledgement, in which participants are invited to reflect on their personal relationship to this place, closely mirrors the type of land-based learning experiences that Howl has offered young people over the past three years.

Depending on weather conditions, we will either hike up Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain or down to the Bow River. Both options are beginner friendly and will start and end at the Kinnear Centre.

Please note there will a $10 participant fee, payment can be made to field trip leaders.

Who's at the bottom of the creek? The River Institute's Aquatic Invertebrate Ecology Program LIMITED
This field trip will highlight one of the River Institute’s most sought-after education programs, aquatic invertebrate ecology. This program has grown increasingly relevant in the context of engaging learners with climate change and ecosystem health.

A modified version of this program will be delivered to demonstrate to educators that engaging learners of all ages with aquatic macroinvertebrates and water can be done almost anywhere, anytime of the year, and with limited equipment.

This field trip will entail a demonstration on how to sample for aquatic macroinvertebrates from a small creek, followed by having educators try it out for themselves. After collecting specimens, we will demonstrate how to identify them with a magnifying glass and easy-to-use dichotomous keys, and throughout this process, we would tally the number of aquatic organisms that we collect and discuss how changes in species abundance and diversity can signify shifts in water quality due to climate-driven stressors and more.

To extend learning, a demonstration on how to do a basic biodiversity index to determine the health of an ecosystem will also be provided. Each participant will leave with free resources, such as laminated dichotomous key.

Building Readers and Writers Through Engaging with Place-based Sustainability Issues
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT

The ability to use language—whether to share ideas, raise awareness, or speak up—is key to building a more sustainable future. Strong reading, writing, and thinking skills are often overlooked but are essential for achieving sustainability goals.

In this session, you’ll discover how to use critical literacy to help students analyze texts (including the environment), consider diverse perspectives, and examine power and justice in their local communities. We’ll explore practical activities, sample lessons, and a framework based on examples from a recent place-based, integrated unit research pilot entitled Who Speaks for the Trees, conducted in upper elementary grades in Canada. Leave inspired and equipped to integrate sustainability topics into language arts—or any subject—and empower students to create meaningful change.

This workshop is for any educator - no matter the subject area or grade - who feels like they could benefit from more knowledge regarding the basics of climate change: this will be a crash course on the causes and mechanism of climate change, its impacts on societies and ecosystems, and different responses to the issue/what we as a society can do about it. A sound understanding of these topics can leave you feeling more equipped should it come up in your classroom or if you’d like to incorporate more climate change education into your teaching practice.

Dramatized Animal Hikes - Stories, Movement and Activities to help children connect to local animals. FILLING
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT
Owl
As educators, we often find ourselves guiding children through natural areas, pointing out animals, naming them, and sharing a few facts before moving on. While this approach offers information, it rarely immerses children in the unfolding stories of the natural world. To help children feel truly connected to nature and the stories that are found there, they need to become part of the narrative.
In this engaging workshop, Jacob will introduce the concept of dramatized animal hikes—a dynamic way that he developed, to bring the lives of animals to life. Participants will journey through the seasons alongside a red squirrel, experiencing firsthand what it’s like to live in the forest. We’ll explore how to cache food for the winter, construct a cozy drey, remain alert for potential dangers, and gracefully leap from branch to branch. Each step of these interactive hikes is rooted in research and carefully crafted to authentically follow a common animal’s life over the course of a year.

Ani to Pisi - Creating Community on the Land LIMITED
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT
203
You will learn to facilitate an embodiment of the traditional Blackfoot story, “Ani to Pisi,” by Clement Bear Chief. This activity promotes Decolonization and Truth and Reconciliation. It is a powerful story, rooted in Indigenous teachings, offering universal lessons that resonate across everyday life, centring on caring for one another, creating community and connectedness. Mount Royal University students, working alongside and with permission from Siksika Elder Roy Bear Chief have developed a toolkit to create a holistic and interactive learning experience that according to Roy, must take place on the land. Participants will have the opportunity to bring this to life through a collaborative outdoor activity known as the Human Spider Web, a creation by Roy Bear Chief. Participants are invited to access the toolkit (which is free of charge) for their own schools and settings. Elder Roy Bear Chief will be attendance and has a dream of Ani to Pisi being shared throughout turtle island.

Land as Our Teacher: Learning From and With the Land, Guided by 4Rs of Indigenous Land-Based Education FULL
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT
201
As spring unfolds and the Earth begins to offer us a wealth of gifts, we pause to reflect on the teaching of reciprocity and our responsibilities as stewards of the land. Join me as we explore 4 Rs of Indigenous land-based education (Responsibility, Respect, Relationships, and Reciprocity) and learn how to honour these teachings throughout the year. Together, we will explore the natural spaces surrounding the Banff Centre, learning how to identify plant medicines and deepen our connection with the land.
We’ll craft a healing salve using common plantain—a remedy you can bring along on your nature adventures. Together, we will explore how natural remedies support our well-being and discuss ways to give back to the land through these healing practices.
By the end of this session, you will walk away with practical ideas and tools for easily integrating the 4Rs of Indigenous land-based education into your school’s outdoor spaces.

Land as Teacher-a settler perspective on incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing and being on the land LIMITED
Thursday May 8, 2025 3:15pm - 4:30pm MDT
This session will incorporate a holistic approach, centring our experiences around activating the mind, heart, body and spirit. We will explore the concept of sit-spots and examining the land through the Blackfoot concept of "okkakiosatoo"-or to "look carefully." We will do plant exploration and examine what is living, growing and thriving in the surrounding area to see what knowledge we can acquire and share collectively. We will gather in circle to discuss concepts explored by Indigenous Authors Robin Wall-Kimmerer and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and we will explore ways to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into classrooms in a wide variety of disciplines. Incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing, being, belonging and doing through a land-based approach is something that can seem scary, but through this session I will share tangible ways that you can help elevate and uplift these perspectives in your daily lives and practices.
